BOSS Simon Stead says he’ll remain with his hometown club Sheffield as long as he’s wanted by the club owners.

Stead, who had two spells as a rider at Owlerton, has had three seasons in charge and was all set to lead them into the Premiership before the pandemic forced the postponement of a full league season.

The former Great Britain World Cup star, who is now joint boss of the national team, says it’s an honour to be at the club.

“I love it and I’ve missed it this year,” said Stead, who is also based at the family business, Eric Stead car dealership, during the week.

“It’s nice to be involved. I finished riding by winning the PLRC (Premier League Riders’ Championship) back in 2016 at Owlerton and that sits nicely with me, but then to become manager and win the league title was amazing.

“I was thrilled to ride for Sheffield across two different spells. I started as a kid at Peterborough but I suppose it was inevitable I’d ride for Sheffield at some stage.

“I enjoy the team management side of things now and I can’t wait to get started next spring for the new season.

“As long as Marc, Damien and Peter still want me, I’ll be there. I have a great relationship with them and they are all very passionate people, they want what is best for the club.”

Stead has his hands full trying to formulate team plans for next season – and he’s about to get busier.

Wife Amy is expecting their first child next week and Stead is relishing the prospect of parenthood.

“It’s an exciting time and we can’t wait,” he said. “I’m not sure what to expect, but just like when I was riding I’ll give my very best as a parent!”
