RAPID Charles Wright admits that Sheffield’s Championship title defence bid must start with wins on the road.

Tigers’ new-look line-up produced a fine display in thrashing much-fancied Glasgow by 22 points at Owlerton last Thursday.

But now Wrighty insists that the Yorkshire club must use that result as a springboard to getting results away from home - starting at Newcastle tonight (6.30).

He said: “We can do it at home it’s just away meetings that we’re struggling at and that’s why we need to win a few matches.

“It’s alright winning at home but starting for Newcastle on Sunday we need to pick something up on the road.

“We’ve brought in some new faces and it has started very well. I was quite impressed with Broc Nicol. I’ve never seen him ride but he’s already on the pace and he looked quick. That’s great news for the team. He’s done an awesome job.”

Team boss Simon Stead also knows that Tigers must start to produce on their travels to have any chance of retaining the league title.

He added: “I think it was a massive statement beating a powerhouse side like Glasgow by that sort of margin.

“But our home form has been pretty strong. We just seem to suffer a bit away from Owlerton. I’m confident our new line-up with Broc in the middle order will help to make us more potent.

“There’s little doubt that we need to do better. We’ve simply not been good enough away from home and our performances haven’t been up to our usual standards.

“That has to change immediately with our trip to Newcastle. We hope we can kick on now after such a great win at home to Glasgow.”

New boy Californian Broc Nicol was a revelation on his debut with five points but knows he has harder tests ahead as he faces new tracks every week.

He said: “You’ve got to keep calm, just keep doing what you are doing. In this sport you are only as good as your last ride. I’ve just got to keep this going at Newcastle on Sunday and hopefully I can have another good one.”
