ANDRE Compton thumbed his nose at selectors who denied him a place in Monday's big British Final by romping to yet another maximum as table-topping Tigers overcame second-placed Rye House at Owlerton.

Despite being the top Brit in the Premier League, the Sheffield captain was unbelievably overlooked when the initial field for British speedway's showpiece was assembled.

And to add insult to injury, Compton's case has again been ignored following the withdrawal of Eastbourne's David Norris, with youngster Daniel King instead being given the nod to race in Monday's televised meeting at Wolverhampton.

It all fuelled Compton's determination to impress against the title-chasing Rockets - and he promptly sped to five classy wins, equalling the season's fastest time this year at Owlerton in his opening ride and dishing out three wins against speedway's hottest prospect, Tai Woffinden.

The 16 year old was expected to join Sheffield last year but instead chose the Hertfordshire club and in just three months has climbed to the top of the Rye rankings and has also been tipped as a future World Champion.

Woffinden did provide the Rockets' biggest threat, his 13-point haul including a stunning tactical ride win in heat 10 when he battled from the back to beat Tigers' duo James Birkinshaw and Ricky Ashworth.

But that was as good as it got for the visitors.

While Compton was untouchable, Ben Wilson also returned to form with a paid maximum, lining up with his skipper for three of the seven home 5-1s.

There were solid returns throughout the Sheffield ranks but Rye's damage limitation exercise meant they went home with enough points in the bag to give them a strong chance of the aggregate bonus point when the sides meet again at Hoddesdon later this month.
