NEWCASTLE 49 TIGERS 44

Sunday May 01, 2011
SHEFFIELD had to settle for a solitary league point from their Sunday evening trip to Tyneside.

The Tigers looked to be heading to their second Premier League away win in three days, only to suffer a late Newcastle fightback that saw the Geordie side snatch victory in a last heat decider.

Eric Boocock’s men jumped into a 30-18 lead after eight races, but inspired by a Scott Robson 18-point maximum the Diamonds came storming back in the latter stages.

Robson (tactical ride) and Claes Nedermark held off Shane Parker for an 8-1 in heat 9 and the Diamonds really made the Tigers start to sweat when they further reduced the deficit to just three-points (36-33) with a 4-2 in heat 10.

Josh Auty and Simon Lambert momentarily settled the nerves with a 4-2 in heat 12, but the meeting was turned on its head when the home duo of Kyle Newman and Kevin Doolan raced to an unexpected 5-1 over Ricky Ashworth and Shane Parker in heat 13.

The Tigers still led by a single point at this stage, but they soon found themselves trailing when Robson and a rejuvenated Newman raced to another five-pointer in the penultimate race.

Sheffield needed nothing less than five-points in the final race to claim the away victory, but it was not to be as Robson completed his full-house ahead of Auty, Doolan and Parker.
