TIGERS SIGN NEW NUMBER ONE

Wednesday December 15, 2010
SHEFFIELD Tigers have unveiled experienced Aussie Shane Parker as their new number one rider for the 2011 season.

Parker, 40, has also confirmed it will be his last year in British racing before heading home with his family.

He joins Josh Auty, Ricky Ashworth, Hugh Skidmore, Simon Lambert and Emiliano Sanchez in the Owlerton team for the new campaign which starts against Belle Vue on Thursday, March 17.

Said Parker: "I've got my bikes back over here from Poland and I think they will serve me well on the bigger Sheffield track. I have had mixed fortunes around the place down the years but when Sean Wilson (former skipper) got hurt I did quite a few guest appearances for them and enjoyed it.

"I'm excited about the new season and I think Sheffield can expect a good one with a few of us challenging for the number one spot."

Tigers co-promoter David Hoggart said: "I am confident Shane will bring a new dimension to Sheffield, he is the ultimate professional, a team man who will earn us points on and off the track.

“Twilight of his career? Don't believe it he's going out on a high, he gave us a hard time as a visitor to Owlerton last season but he's on our side now, this really is an exciting time for Sheffield fans.

"This does of course means that we have had to release both Paul Cooper and Richard Hall who have been fantastic for Sheffield Speedway.

“We have been in discussion with another club for Richard whilst Paul has still to receive medical clearance to race following the head injury he sustained in August.

“Paul has been very understanding and recognises the difficulty we have, he is a great club man and once fully fit we will be doing everything we can to find him a team place as opportunities arise in the Premier League."
