BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP

Tuesday July 14, 2009
WELCOME to the latest edition of the weekly BSPA bulletins keeping you in touch with news, views and fixtures from the tracks up and down the country.

BIG EVENT LATEST...

CARL Stonehewer is relishing his return to Workington for the Premier League Four Team Championship later this month.

Stonehewer is Workington’s greatest rider of all time after a string of stunning achievements for the Derwent Park club – but this time he will be in opposition as he rides for Redcar in the Moss Bay Metals-backed event on Saturday, July 25.

Workington are the defending champions after Stonehewer helped them to glory last season alongside Joe Haines, Kauko Nieminen and Charles Wright.

And he’s the only rider from that quartet in this year’s meeting as the Comets are represented by four new riders – but they are strongly fancied for the title defence.

Said Stonehewer: “I’m sure it will be a great meeting and it was lovely to win it with Workington last year. Obviously I’d love to do it again with Redcar.”

A bumper crowd is expected for the meeting after 3,000 flocked to last season’s staging at the Cumbrian venue.

Workington have won the title four times in the last 10 years and with Kevin Doolan, Adrian Rymel, Andre Compton and Richard Lawson in their line-up they are sure to be hard to beat this season.

The meeting is the latest in British Speedway’s Super 7even series.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST...

BELLE VUE have applied for a 28-day facility for Billy Forsberg, who does not want to continue in the Elite League at this stage.

Aces boss Chris Morton said: "Billy is riding again but he says he isn't ready to come back here. It doesn't mean he isn't coming back sooner or later but it does mean he's not returning yet.

"Billy is trying hard to find himself, his form and his confidence after two bad crashes so we aren't criticising him for easing his way back. But he is withholding his services. He is No 6 in our averages so we have requested a 28-day facility for him."

COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes says the Bees have names in the frame to cover for Rory Schlein, who suffered collarbone, wrist, finger and knee injuries in an horrific crash at Brandon last Friday.

Oakes said: "We've been going through a list of a riders, and we have been talking to them over the weekend.

"We do know who we want, but there are one or two question marks over whether he's going to be available, and hopefully it will go in our favour."

EASTBOURNE have turned their attentions to a potential move for experienced Swede Mikael Max after a bid to bring in Grzegorz Walasek fell through.

Eagles star Cameron Woodward, a team-mate of Max in Poland, said: "It just depends whether he gets a new team in Sweden.

"He wants to spend time with his family but he also knows he can’t just ride in one league."

IPSWICH manager Pete Simmons says an improvement to the club's results at Foxhall are the minimum requirement from the recent team changes, with three riders joining in the last month.

Returning No.1 Scott Nicholls was the hero against Wolverhampton on Thursday, and both Troy Batchelor and Robert Miskowiak have had impressive early meetings.

Simmons said: "We have got to start winning at home from now on. We've made the team changes and we are looking for big things. The riders are in no doubt about that."

LAKESIDE gave their play-off chances a major boost by becoming the first team to win at Swindon in the Elite League this season.

Hammers boss Jon Cook said: "Even those not hitting the scores were active in helping team-mates prepare for races, and that’s the sort of spirit that will take us into the Play Offs. After that, we have to believe that we won't be there just to make up the numbers.

"If we can target another away win and only have the odd slip up at home then a top four place will be ours."

PETERBOROUGH co-boss Wayne Swales believes the Panthers are well equipped to reach the top four after some good results just before the World Cup break.

Swales said: "Against Ipswich, it was the sort of display we were putting together on a regular basis before we had that recent blip which I am sure is now behind us.

"I know we initially wanted ten points from the four meetings, but we were ever so unlucky at Coventry. I am convinced we would have won with a fully fit Kenneth Hansen, so all in all I am not unhappy to have collected eight."

POOLE newcomer Steve Boxall admits the club's upcoming Cup clash with Belle Vue will be a big night for him - because he started the season in Aces colours.

Boxall said: "I want to go back there and beat them. I know the track and it’s a good one. I’ve had experience there this year and look forward to going back and scoring some more points.

"I’m riding for Poole now, so I’m paid by them to try and help them win. I’m fully fit now. I was a month ago, but couldn’t get a club."

SWINDON manager Alun Rossiter insists his side will bounce back from their shock home defeat against Lakeside, with Matej Zagar's second-ride crash costing the Robins dear.

Rossiter said: "We need to sit down, regroup and have a chat with the boys. Matej was a big loss, but it always seem to be Lakeside who come here and nick it.

"If we hadn't lost Matej, we wouldn't have lost the meeting. Ipswich's win over Wolves was a silver lining, but we have to get organised again over the World Cup break."

WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Peter Karlsson says he benefited from his year away from the Elite League last season - but is thoroughly enjoying his return, and his team's position in the title race.

Karlsson said: "I'm enjoying every minute of it, even though it means I'm a lot busier than last season.

"I enjoyed last season, taking a bit easier, and it set me up nicely to come back. We've got a good spirit in the team here at Wolves and the younger lads are doing a great job."

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK returnee Stan Burza went from one extreme to another over the weekend - scoring an imperious 18-point maximum in the home win over Newcastle, and then failing to score in the return fixture the following day!

Promoter John Anderson said: "He just couldn't get to grips with things at Newcastle and looked a shadow of who we know the real Stan is, but that man will be back when Somerset arrive next week. He was absolutely dominant at home."

BIRMINGHAM promoter Graham Drury is assessing his options for replacing Manuel Hauzinger, and expects to have a new face in the team for next Wednesday's home clash with Glasgow.

Drury said: "I've been quite surprised by the amount of calls I've had from riders interested in riding for Birmingham. Some of them can't join us because their average wouldn't fit, but it's been a compliment to the club that riders are keen to join us."
EDINBURGH star Thomas H Jonasson says he is pleased to have added a short-term stint back with the Monarchs to his schedule as the club work to bring in a replacement.

Jonasson said: "We have no quarrel with each other, although I do understand that some fans didn't appreciate my decision to leave. I will do everything I can to score as many points as possible."

GLASGOW'S problems are set to ease with Josh Grajczonek due to return from injury in Sunday's home clash with Somerset - and the Tigers are also hoping for good news on skipper Shane Parker.

Co-promoter Stewart Dickson said: "Both have been massive losses for the club and getting them back sooner rather than later will give everyone in the team a huge lift."

KING'S LYNN boss Rob Lyon says a strong start will be vital if the Stars are to overcome a 12-point first leg deficit when they face Workington in the Premier Trophy semi-final on Wednesday.

Lyon said: "I just hope we can attack them hard in the first few races and erase the deficit as early as possible, which will give us all an exciting climax when the big guns meet in the last few races."

NEWCASTLE boss George English was relieved to return to winning ways as the Diamonds got the better of Berwick in the second of their weekend clashes.

English said: "The lads wanted revenge badly after Saturday night, and got their just rewards. They all pulled their weight, and our new boys Mark Lemon and Rene Bach really excelled in their first match at their new home."

NEWPORT manager Laurence Rogers believes a top-half finish in the Premier League is a realistic target for the revised Wasps line-up.

Rogers said: "The addition of Marek (Mroz) gives us a new dimension and bottom-end power. One Jonas (Andersson) gets settled in and has his best engines back, we will be a force to be reckoned with."

REDCAR boss Brian Havelock is confident that his side can improve still further after an impressive 51-41 win over Workington last Thursday.

Havelock said: "We have a good enough team to get results like this now. We’ve got that little bit extra from Stuart (Swales), which proves a point. We can be a good team at home if we knit together like that."

RYE HOUSE'S injured youngster Joe Haines is due to have his neck brace removed, raising hopes that he could make an unlikely comeback before the end of the season.

Rockets boss John Sampford said: "I think he's got the right attitude to put it behind him, and when he is fit he'll be able to move on quickly."

SCUNTHORPE manager Kenny Smith achieved his final ambition to take charge of the Scorpions in their home clash with Edinburgh on Saturday, before sadly passing away less than 48 hours later.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "We all knew his death was coming but that doesn't make it any easier. It was a very emotional night for all concerned, and we are all devastated at losing him. It has been an honour to have had Kenny in our lives for the last five years."

SHEFFIELD owner Neil Machin feels the Tigers will be a team to keep a close eye on in the second half of the season, after several encouraging results of late.

Machin said: "We're buzzing with confidence after our win at Glasgow on Sunday and I'm certainly not ruling us out of a title push. We need the fans to back us in big numbers."

SOMERSET are making plans for their 10th Anniversary meeting on August 14, and have already confirmed the booking of GB and Wolverhampton star Tai Woffinden.

General manager Dave Croucher said: "We aim to have as many former Rebels as we can get together present on the night, as we want to be able to make it a night for all the Somerset fans to remember and to mark just how far this club has come in such a short space of time."

STOKE will have Danish rider Jesper Kristiansen back in their side when they face two meetings in two nights on Friday (at Scunthorpe) and on Saturday (at home to Edinburgh).

Promoter Dave Tattum said: "Jesper has been practising, and him coming back can only give us a boost."

WORKINGTON manager Ian Thomas says the Comets will be giving it their all to defend their 12-point first leg lead when they travel to King's Lynn in the second leg of the Premier Trophy semi-final.

Thomas said: "Without question that is our best home result of the season. However, we still have a mountain to climb on Wednesday as they are still red hot favourites, because nobody has managed to get near to them down there this season."

NATIONAL LEAGUE action continues and all the latest club press releases are now available at the news section on our website www.speedwaygb.com
