WELCOME to the latest edition of the weekly BSPA bulletins keeping you in touch with news, views and fixtures from the tracks up and down the country.

BIG EVENT LATEST...

WORKINGTON are the bookies favourites to win the Premier League Fours on their own track later this month.

The Cumbrian side will be chasing silverware along with seven rival quartets at Derwent Park on Saturday, July 25 in a meeting sponsored by Moss Bay Metals.

Comets include local lad Richard Lawson, son of Glasgow legend Steve, who has made a successful transition from Motorcross racing to speedway.

And in Kevin Doolan, Adrian Rymel and Andre Compton they have a powerhouse spearhead.

Doolan said: “It would be great for us to win it on our own track in front of our own supporters.

“It’s a big meeting for the Premier League and we believe we’re in a great position to go out and win it.

“But there are a lot of great riders in the meeting and we’ll have to be at our best to win it.”

Comets are up against Edinburgh, Rye House and Scunthorpe in Group B.

Young Australian sensation Darcy Ward, who has taken the Premier League by storm this season, is included in the King’s Lynn side hoping to progress from Group A. They are up against Somerset, Redcar and Berwick.

After the success of the Premier League Pairs at Somerset, another massive crowd is expected for the fourth Super 7even event of the season.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST...

BELLE VUE were unable to build on a dream start to go 10-2 up against league leaders Swindon, and eventually went down to a 40-50 home defeat.

The Aces were hit by an injury to James Wright, who did take his last ride despite suffering a foot problem, and were unhappy when Heat 11 was re-started after the Robins' Ryan Fisher had moved at the start, with the visitors then taking maximum points.

Boss Chris Morton said: "Our riders did the right thing by the rules and were disadvantaged by it. But I can't believe that we lost by so many points."

COVENTRY youngster Ricky Wells produced easily his best haul in the Elite League with his 11-points being the decisive factor in the Bees' win over Peterborough.

Wells said: "It's a real confidence booster and I went into my last race so much more relaxed because I knew I could do it, I knew I could make the start.

"The Coventry fans have been so good even after I kept scoring zeroes all the time, and the management have stuck with me. I needed that support because it's been such a change for me, coming from the small tracks in America."

EASTBOURNE star Cameron Woodward is keen for the club to bring in a new face to fill in for the long-term injury absence of David Norris.

Woodward said: "We miss Floppy at home for sure. He was always good for eight points at least from four or five rides.

"Once you have only got six riders, you can't afford to have one rider have a bad night. That's what we've been up against for the last two months. Hopefully we fill that void or Floppy comes back."

IPSWICH manager Pete Simmons expects plenty of excitement from his new-look team for the remainder of the season, and is tipping Troy Batchelor for a good spell with the club.

Simmons said: "Troy is a rider I have watched closely since his very first laps here in the UK and he is determined to finish the season in style.

"One thing is for sure, Thursday nights have a very different look about them and our fans can rest assured that there will be no lack of entertainment at Foxhall during the run up to the play-offs, and we intend to push for them all the way."

LAKESIDE have shelved plans to stage a challenge match against Rye House this Friday - although it is still an event they could stage at a later date.

Co-promoter Jon Cook said: "We feel that as a Promotion we have a good contact with the thoughts and views of our fans and it’s obvious that this fixture at this stage of the season is of little interest in the current economic climate.

"We scheduled the meeting with the best of intentions and would like to thank Len at Rye for his help, but it’s better to admit this was a mistake now. At the right time and right team strengths a meet with the Rockets would certainly be something we would consider in future."

PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales said the weekend win at Eastbourne was a vital result in the Panthers' play-off bid - especially after going down at Coventry 24 hours earlier.

Swales said: "We needed to prove we could get a result on the road and it is long overdue. Away wins are just that bit sweeter and obviously very important with the new scoring system this season.

"We all got together before the meeting and it was clear the boys were really up for it. We had another little chat at the interval when we were in a good position and everyone was determined not to let it slip."

POOLE are hopeful that the signing of Steve Boxall will provide a solution to their problems at reserve.

Boxall joins the Pirates after spells this year with Belle Vue and Newcastle, and promoter Matt Ford said: "I am more than pleased that we have been able to secure Steve’s services.

"He is a very determined rider and I believe he will strengthen our reserve berth considerably. I would also like to thank Rye House promoter Len Silver for his help in making this move possible."

SWINDON took another major step towards at least a top-two finish this season with a maximum four-point haul from Monday's 50-40 win at Belle Vue.

Manager Alun Rossiter said: "Once the boys got dialled in it was comfortable. I just felt we had the strength in depth and we knew we had the riders coming on strong at the end.

"We won the toss in Heat 15. Matej (Zagar) had a good gate and Leigh (Adams) was awesome. I am really delighted with the victory especially after the way we started which had me a bit on edge."

WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Peter Karlsson rode on despite illness to score eleven points from four rides in the win over Eastbourne which maintained the club's perfect home record.

Karlsson, who was unable to ride in Heat 15, said: "I've not been well for a few days now, so I was just glad to score well for the team from my four rides.

"It was hard work, I was out of breath and there was no way I could have taken a fifth ride. I don't think I let anyone down."

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK have agreed terms with former favourite Stan Burza, who is expected to return to the club for Wednesday's trip to Birmingham as a replacement for William Lawson.

Owner John Anderson said: "Stan has been approached by a number of British clubs recently, but stated categorically that there’s only one UK club he'd return here to ride for, and that's Berwick. This is a testimony to the affection he has for us and our fans."

BIRMINGHAM owner Tony Mole has confirmed that the club's new planning application has been submitted - including a proposed change of race night from Wednesday to Thursday.

Mole said: "I’m both hopeful and confident that the council’s planning committee will support our new application. We have brought great success to the club, both on and off the track, and we have helped promote the Birmingham name on a national basis."

EDINBURGH secured maximum points from their home clash with Newport with both teams doing well to complete the meeting in difficult conditions.

Monarchs skipper Matthew Wethers said: "The track was pretty poor and it was difficult to race on, and at times it was a struggle for both teams. Because of all the rain it took away a lot of our home advantage but full credit to the track staff, we were lucky to get a meeting at all."

GLASGOW's injury problems remain a major concern with Josh Grajczonek having to put his comeback on hold, and captain Shane Parker currently on the sidelines too along with Ross Brady.

Co-promoter Alan Dick said: "Things are very much going against us at the moment, so what we all have to do is roll up our sleeves and get on with the job in hand. We will be very reliant on guests in the meantime, and the rest of the team will need to race as strongly as they have done at any time this season."

KING'S LYNN boss Rob Lyon believes the trip to Edinburgh on Friday could be a pivotal fixture in the race for Premier League honours.

Lyon said: "Edinburgh are always strong but it's a track we don't mind, and we've won there in the past. We will be looking to get something out of the match, and hopefully we'll be the first club to stop their run."

NEWCASTLE believe they should be able to make progress up the Premier League table having signed Mark Lemon, who joins the Diamonds in place of Craig Branney.

Manager George English said: "As soon as we knew that Mark was available, we decided he was the man we needed to give us a very good, solid-looking side for the rest of the league campaign."

NEWPORT'S new Swedish signing Jonas Andersson is hopeful that he can make a major impact with the Wasps and has targeted a long-term future with the club.

Andersson said: "I needed more meetings, and Newport were the best choice for me, because my manager Peter and Craig Watson are good friends, so I knew that I had someone where who could help me if I had problems. As long as Newport and their fans want me, I'm going to ride there."

STUART Swales made a successful return to racing with paid eight for Redcar against Newcastle - his first competitive match for eight years!

Swales said: "I was panicking after my first ride and thinking I was going to end up with no points. I had a few problems with the clutch, but it was nice to make reasonable starts later on in the meeting."

RYE HOUSE star Robert Mear made a highly successful return to action after a month out by scoring 14 (paid 16) in the Rockets' weekend win over Edinburgh.

Mear had been suffering from a broken hand having crashed out at Swindon, but dropped just two points from six rides and will now also be looking to resume his doubling-up duties with Lakeside.

SCUNTHORPE switch to Saturday night racing this week with the first leg of their vital Premier Trophy semi-final against holders Edinburgh.

Scorpions promoter Rob Godfrey said: "To beat the league leaders (Workington) by twelve points was fantastic, but it's a massive night when we take on Edinburgh. It's about time we showed them how good a side we really can be."

SHEFFIELD duo Richard Hall and Josh Auty are both expected to ride for the Tigers against Berwick on Thursday, despite suffering heavy knocks last week.

Hall, who had feared a broken foot, said: "I'm pleased nothing is broken but it's been very painful since the weekend. But I'm determined to ride, I'm not one to sit around and feel sorry for myself and I certainly feel ready to get back on the bike."

SOMERSET have signed Nick Simmons to fill the gap in their squad created by the release of Jay Herne.

Simmons, who had a brief spell with Scunthorpe recently, made his debut with a score of two (paid four) in the Rebels' close-fought 48-42 win over Sheffield last Friday.

STOKE boss John Woolridge said he was relieved to take the win from a close home local derby with Birmingham, after a heavy defeat at Perry Barr three nights earlier.

Woolridge said: "It's a point dropped but at the end I was happy to get away with just taking the two points. I felt a few decisions went against us, but we dug deep and got the win."

WORKINGTON owner Keith Denham accepted the Comets had dropped a point when Glasgow made a late comeback in Saturday's clash at Derwent Park, leaving the scores at 48-45.

Denham said: "I was disappointed not to get the full three points, but towards the end I was just pleased to win it. It was a good, entertaining match and that’s good for business."
