NEWCASTLE 39 SHEFFIELD 50

Sunday April 05, 2009
SHEFFIELD raced to magnificent 50-39 Premier Trophy victory at Newcastle on Sunday evening.

The Tigers were in great form throughout, with Chris Mills having his best meeting so far this season scoring 14+1 from six rides. Skipper Ricky Ashworth also scored 14+1 in what was the team’s first away success of the campaign.

The Owlerton side took the lead with a Mills and Josh Auty 5-1 in heat 2 and by the completion of heat 6 their advantage had been stretched to 21-12.

Newcastle did close the gap to 32-25 with a couple of 4-2s before the interval, but after the break Sheffield more or less wrapped things up when Josh Auty and Ashworth raced to a 5-1 over Jason King and Casper Wortmann.

Diamonds reserve Craig Branney donned the back and white helmet in heat 12 in a bid to salvage the match, but man-of the-match Mills won the race to the chequered flag and Newcastle had to settle for a 5-3 advantage.

Ashworth and Richard Hall followed that up with a 4-2 in heat 13 and with the final two races shared, the eventual eleven-point win was enough to give the Tigers the full four Premier Trophy points and top spot in the northern section.
