BIG EVENT LATEST…

RYE House will once again host the cream of the Conference later this month.

The Hoddesdon club stage the hugely popular Conference League Riders’ Championship on Saturday, September 27.

And British Speedway Chairman Pete Toogood wants to see a structure developed to
enhance the chances of younger riders within the sport.

He said: “I’m pleased Rye House are staging an event like this because they do good work developing younger British riders.

“And inevitably at this time of year there is a lot of talk about the structure of the sport for next season, whatever the outcome of the AGM I want to see some
serious provision made for the development of youngsters.

“We held the Summer Camp in July and this was a massive success for youngsters,
both familiar to the sport and newcomers. I hope we can continue that good work as an association.

“I cannot predict a winner for the CLRC, I guess the Rye House boys will fancy their chances but there are a lot of other good, solid performers who will be in contention. I feel sure it will be a terrific night of racing.”

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST…

BELLE VUE know that the re-staging of their home match against Coventry, which is still to be arranged, is likely to be crucial to their hopes of avoiding the bottom two.

Manager Chris Morton said: "The match against Wolverhampton last Monday was very important for us and the Coventry fixture looks like being the same.

"I was pleased to get the Wolves match out of the way with a win because they were fired up after a heavy 60-30 defeat on their recent visit to Belle Vue and we had four riders missing."

COVENTRY manager Peter Oakes says the Bees need to rapidly improve on their showing at Peterborough on Monday where they lost by nine points despite having the majority of heat winners.

Oakes said: "You're not going to win matches with twelve last places, especially away from home. It's an impossible task if you're not getting third places.

"You have to take your hat off to Hans Andersen and Chris Harris for their race wins, and I would imagine that they went home fairly depressed that we got nothing out of it despite their efforts."

EASTBOURNE star Edward Kennett says the Arlington side are fully focused on salvaging some silverware from an up-and-down season, having reached the Knockout Cup Final.

Kennett said: "The team seems to have got together and that's what we maybe should have done when we were losing meetings.

"I think we have all realised that we want to win the Knockout Cup and everyone seems to have got a bit closer."

IPSWICH welcomed back Jarek Hampel and Robert Miskowiak for their crucial win at Wolverhampton on Monday which booked their play-off place.

The Witches had been under some pressure after losing at home to Lakeside last week but responded well at Monmore Green.

Promoter John Louis said: "Jarek has been riding under the weather for a while and it got to him. I was rough with a similar bug a few weeks ago and know how bad he is feeling. And there was nothing we could do about the situation with Robert, and could only bring in a six point Premier League rider as he was not injured or ill."

LAKESIDE have bolstered their injury-hit side in time for the Elite League play-offs with the signing of in-form Pole Tomasz Jedrzejak.

Jedrzejak almost qualified for the Grand Prix at the weekend and has been in top form in his home country this season.

Hammers chief Jon Cook said: “Tomasz comes to us highly recommended and he will be in a reserve berth for October.

“He’s a class act these days and he should fit in here at Lakeside quite comfortably.”

PETERBOROUGH skipper Ryan Sullivan reckons the Panthers are in line for a strong finish to the season to avoid a place in the bottom two play-offs.

Sullivan said: "Everyone is pulling together and fighting for one another, which is only going to help us in our current position.

"Everyone is enjoying their racing under a new promotion and we know we have to make sure we get ourselves out of the bottom two."

POOLE star Davey Watt intends to return to action this week, quashing speculation that he could miss the Pirates' play-off campaign with a foot injury.

Watt said: "It's ligament damage between the bones. They've been stretched and shaken about a bit by the impact of being caught in Lukas Dryml's back wheel.

"I'm definitely not out for the season, and I want to do some testing this week to make sure I have my equipment right because we have some trophies to win."

SWINDON manager Alun Rossiter has given his backing to recently axed Robins rider Travis McGowan to come back stronger from a disappointing season.

Rossiter said: "I think in the end it was a weight off Trov's shoulders. Despite his outward cheer it must have got him down, and it wasn't for the lack of spending or trying things with his machinery.

"While he was scoring a few points, even though it was below expectations, there were no better options. We were not going to bring Seb Alden back after just one meeting in Sweden."

WOLVERHAMPTON youngster Ludvig Lindgren made a dream start to his Monmore Green career with a win in his first race.

Lindgren, 17, is the younger brother of skipper Freddie and looked useful in the 52-40 defeat by Ipswich.

He said: “It’s a dream come true for me to be riding for Wolverhampton. My brother speaks very highly of the club and of British Speedway in general.”

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST…

BERWICK promoter Peter Waite was proud of his patched-up side in a win over Stoke on Saturday, with the Bandits looking to finish as high as possible to book their choice of Young Shield fixture.

Waite said: "They really gelled again as a team and put together a fine win. We are so far from the expected league position as predicted by the sport’s experts who looked at us as bottom material."

BIRMINGHAM boss Graham Drury insists his riders are fighting for their future with the club.

Drury already has ideas on the structure of the Brummies team for 2009 but is yet to make final decisions.

He said: “The remaining meetings this season are important to the riders because I want to see who really wants to be back with us next season. It’s up to them.”

EDINBURGH reserve Matthew Wethers scored a sensational 21-point maximum to move the Monarchs one step closer to the Premier League title with a win at Newcastle.

Skipper Derek Sneddon said: "I struggled badly, but the rest of the boys eventually got the job done. This is a big win for us. The title isn't done and dusted, but it has made life a bit easier at the top."

GLASGOW'S team building for 2009 is already well advanced with Australian youngsters Josh Grajczonek and Mitchell Davey both agreeing terms for a second season along with newcomer Peter Juul.

Co-promoter Stewart Dickson said: "That is now three riders signed for next season and all are teenagers. That has got to be good for the long term future of this team and despite our season being a tough one in terms of our league position, there is no doubt that we have progressed a lot as a club."

ISLE OF WIGHT youngster James Holder has accepted that he may need a month's rest to cure the scaphoid problem that has forced him to take a break from the Islanders' team.

Holder said: "The plaster has got to stay on for three or four weeks, but I'm bored stiff already! I'll be going to matches to support the lads and keep myself as fit as possible until I get the green light to start riding again."

KING'S LYNN'S Rusty Harrison has been forced to quit the sport with deep vein thrombosis after a blood clot in his stomach spread to his leg.

Lynn promoter Buster Chapman said: "There's no way he can ride this season, next season or even the one after that. You're looking at two and a half years and that is a big ask to come back from. We have to be thankful that they caught it at the right time. We all know what could have happened if it had been left untreated."

MILDENHALL have given Luke Priest an opportunity in the Premier League for the remainder of the season after parting company with recent signing Lee Smart.

Co-promoter Jonathan Chapman said: "Luke has a lot of potential and rides small tracks well, so I feel our surface will suit him. We can't go out and sign a No 1 because there just isn't anyone, so we've made the best out of a bad situation with the signings we've made."

NEWCASTLE intend to make a late-season signing after suffering three defeats over the weekend and being hit by a mounting injury crisis.

Co-promoter Darryl Illingworth said: "For next weekend, all being well, I hope to bring a new Danish rider into the team in place of George Stancl and we will also have to find someone to replace Dickie Juul. I have heard good reports about the
Danish kid, and it is with one eye on 2009 that we are giving him a chance."

READING promoter Malcolm Holloway has reassured the club's supporters that he still has every intention of being in charge of the Racers following their season out next year.

Holloway said: "I can fully understand that supporters are concerned about what is going to happen to this club in the future. I can, however, state that Mark (Legg) and myself are fully committed to this club and when we do get our new stadium up and running in a year’s time, we will be remaining at the helm."

REDCAR manager Brian Havelock praised reserve Benji Compton for his highest score for the club in the Bears' weekend win at Stoke - which keeps them well set for a favourable Young Shield draw.

Havelock said: "Benji was absolutely superb, and it was a great performance by the rest of the lads too."

RYE HOUSE legend skipper Stuart Robson will make a remarkable comeback when he takes his place in Chris Neath's Testimonial meeting on Saturday - eighteen months after suffering serious injuries in a crash at Mildenhall.

Neath said: "It’s an absolute bonus for the Rye fans, and everyone in speedway, to be able to see Robbo in action again. He’s a really good guy and helped to bind the team together at Rye to achieve the success we did between 2005 and 2007."

SCUNTHORPE have suffered successive rain-offs in a wet September so far, but promoter Rob Godfrey says the Scorpions' fixtures will be completed on time.

He said: "We've got two home matches to race but we've got plenty of time and plenty of scope because we can run on any day of the week if we have to."

SHEFFIELD chief Neil Machin has revealed how the club could be ready to make sweeping changes to the team next season.

And he wants to see the Owlerton side enjoy a good end to the season before making firm plans for 2009.

He said: “There could be changes in the winter, but we’ll wait and see. Sometimes you need a change of direction and we are looking at every available option at this stage.”

SOMERSET promoter Mike Golding says the Rebels will still go for every point available although they are now the underdogs in the battle for the Premier League title.

Golding said: "Obviously results did not go our way over the weekend, and it does mean that Edinburgh are almost home and dry as far as lifting the title is concerned, but we will not give up hope whilst it is still mathematically possible for us to pip the Monarchs at the post!"

STOKE skipper Ben Barker continued his good form with double-figures in both of the Potters' weekend matches - but the team went down to defeats at Berwick and at home to Redcar.

Barker said: "Buzz (Burrows) had some bad knocks and some of the others just didn't get out of the starts. We knew that Redcar would come here and give us a hard time and unfortunately the result has gone their way."

WORKINGTON star Daniel Nermark will miss the Comets' run-in after having to give best to a knee injury. The Swede needs an operation and will be out for five months.

Team manager Ian Thomas said: "The knee braces haven’t worked and when he went to hospital the surgeon there said that if he had tried to ride in one more race it could easily have finished his career. I feel desperately sorry for him."
