MILDENHALL 27 SHEFFIELD 65

Sunday July 06, 2008
SHEFFIELD registered their first away league success of the season with an emphatic 65-27 win at Mildenhall on Sunday.

The Fen Tigers simply had no answer to the Yorkshire side’s domination, who had Paul Cooper top-scoring with 14+2, plus Ben Wilson, Joel Parsons, Ricky Ashworth and Andre Compton all finished unbeaten by an opponent.

Sheffield got off to a barn-storming start. This saw them drop just one-point in the opening five races and with a 24-6 lead, the match was already over as a contest.

Wilson won heat 6 ahead of Mildenhall’s Chris Schramm (tactical ride) and Michal Rajkowski and the resulting 5-3 did momentarily cut the Sheffield advantage to 27-11.

The Tigers did suffer a set-back in heat 7 when Lee Smethills was taken to hospital with rib injuries after a first bend fall, but when the racing eventually got back underway the onslaught continued.

Cooper and Compton linked up for two more 5-1s and another maximum from Parsons and Ashworth in heat 11 wrapped it up. Leading by an incredible 46-16 scoreline with four races to go, all that remained now was whether they could hit sixty-points.

In those final four heats Nicki Glanz and Theo Pijper did salvage some pride for Mildenhall with a 5-1 over Cooper, but Sheffield Tigers still headed home with what must be one of the biggest away victories in their history.

MILDENHALL 27: Nicki Glanz 9, Chris Schramm 6, Theo Pijper 5+1, Michal Rajkowski 5, Jan Graversen 2, Robbie Kessler R/R

SHEFFIELD 65: Paul Cooper 14+2, Joel Parsons 13+2, Ben Wilson 13+2, Ricky Ashowrth 10+2, Andre Compton 10+2, Lee Smethills 3, Kyle Hughes 2
