SOMERSET 60 SHEFFIELD 30

Friday July 04, 2008
SHEFFIELD’S away day blues continued with a crushing 60-30 Premier League defeat at Somerset’s Oak Tree Arena.

The Tigers are still to register their first win on the road this season and sadly they never looked likely to achieve it against the league leaders.

The Rebels had solid scoring all down the line with Matthias Kroger 14+2 and Jason Doyle 12 being the pick of the bunch and although Sheffield skipper Andre Compton offered some resistance with 11, a lack of heat winners elsewhere proved costly.

Somerset took advantage of a slow start by the Tigers to go 10-2 up in the first two heats and when Ricky Ashworth suffered the first of two exclusions after falling in heat 5 as rain made conditions tricky, the Rebels piled on the agony to go 23-7 up.

Skipper Andre Compton managed to stem the tide with a couple of race wins and Ben Wilson also saw the chequered flag once, but when Ashworth came a cropper on the third turn in a heat 11 tactical ride, Sheffield were left waiting for the end.

SOMERSET 60: Matthias Kroger 14+2, Jason Doyle 12, Stephan Katt 10+1, Brent Werner 9+1, Emil Kramer 8+2, Jordan Frampton 7+1, Simon Walker R/R

SHEFFIELD 30: Andre Compton 11, Paul Cooper 5, Ben Wilson 5, Ricky Ashworth 3, Lee Smethills 3, Joel Parsons 2, Kyle Hughes 1+1
