BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP

Tuesday July 01, 2008
WELCOME to the latest edition of the weekly BSPA bulletins keeping you in touch with news, views and fixtures from the tracks up and down the country.

BIG EVENT LATEST...

WORKINGTON owner Keith Denham is urging fans up and down the country to sample the new Workington experience at the Premier League Fours on July 26.

Denham, in his first season in charge at Derwent Park, was in a jubilant mood after Comets duo Daniel Nermark and Kauko Nieminen won the Pairs Championship at Somerset.

Now he wants to complete a Super 7even double - by winning the Fours on his own track.

Improvements have been carried out at the Cumbrian venue since Denham took control of the club from long-serving owner Tony Mole.

"It's been hard work without a doubt," said Denham. "But the rewards are there for all to see, we're getting compliments all the time.

"We've worked on the track, spectator facilities and lighting and I would urge fans to come up and see it for themselves.

"Crowds are up on last season which is great and we aim to put on a proper show for the fans. We're getting a lot of backing for the meeting, Hi-Q have stepped in with sponsorship and we want to make the event a big success for the BSPA.

"Fans from visiting clubs will be given a warm welcome, it will be good to see them all. I'm looking forward to it already."

The full line-up will be announced in the near future via the official British Speedway websites.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST...

BELLE VUE star Jason Crump has put his terrific recent form, including his British Grand Prix win, down to his return to the Aces this season after leaving the club at the end of 2006.

Crump said: "I'm back to the way I want to be and it has been a long time coming. I haven't ridden like this since I was at Belle Vue in 2006.

"There's no question that going back there this season has had a lot to do with this. It has helped me to start riding my bike better again. I love that place and it's the track I need to be riding every week."

COVENTRY are concerned that injury problems for Chris Harris and Billy Janniro could de-rail their chances of making full use of their matches in hand during a busy run over the next fortnight.

The Bees were beaten heavily at Lakeside on Monday, and manager Peter Oakes said: "We needed one rider to have an absolutely sensational meeting - but that wasn't going to happen because it was our two best scorers around Lakeside who were missing!

"There's an awful long way to go, and you won't miss out by losing at places like this - but we've got to start picking up some wins, and obviously getting seven fit riders on the track."

EASTBOURNE star Scott Nicholls says the Eagles' reserves have a vital part to play in the club's play-off chase - after James Brundle enjoyed his best meeting at Elite League level with paid ten in the weekend win over Belle Vue.

Nicholls said: "We've struggled in Heat 2 but the reserves are settling down a bit, getting a bit of confidence and that's what we need.

"We want to try to support and encourage team-mates in the right way."

IPSWICH promoter John Louis said a pre-meeting team talk paid dividends before the Witches got back on the winning track against local rivals Peterborough.

Louis said: "It's nice to see the lads looking more like their old selves after the disappointment of our clash at Belle Vue. We had a team meeting before the start, we told the lads exactly what was required and they have gone out and done it.

"I can't praise them enough, they have shown plenty of effort. I was disappointed with some of the commitment at Belle Vue after we went behind, but that's more like it."

LAKESIDE boss Jon Cook issued an ominous warning after the Hammers' 63-29 win over Coventry - he expects further improvement from his riders!

Cook said: "It was a great performance from the team, although most of them can probably also say there was a race where they could have done better.

"It's good to see Ricky (Kling) and Lubos (Tomicek) coming through and also Jonas Davidsson came good at the end of the meeting too, and we saw some good racing from our riders which augurs well for the rest of the season. We have a lot of big meetings to come here."

PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales is unhappy with the attitude of some riders in recent matches as the Panthers continue on a difficult run of results.

Swales said: "I have found myself questioning how much we actually want to win lately because there seems to be a lack of determination and grit.

"That has to stop and we have to get ourselves out of this rut because we are in danger of just going through the motions. We need to find a way of getting everyone to click on the same night."

POOLE legend Craig Boyce, who enjoyed a farewell meeting at Wimborne Road last week, was firmly on the side of unlucky Pirates skipper Bjarne Pedersen after his highly controversial exclusion from the semi-final at the British Grand Prix.

Boyce said: "As a Pirates supporter watching Bjarne who also helps do his engines, I couldn't believe he was excluded. His bike was clearly half a length in front of the guy when the collision occurred.

"I was standing on the outside of the track on the first corner, one of the best views of the incident in the stadium, and Nicki (Pedersen) went into the back of him. So how did the referee get to that decision?"

SWINDON promoter Alun Rossiter says he is confident and happy with the Robins' current position, which sees them top of the table after a first half of the season which has defied the pundits' forecasts.

Rossiter said: "I'd rather be where we are now at the top of the table then where everybody predicted us to be.

"It's okay having meetings in hand, but the other teams still have to win them. We would rather have the points on the board and let them chase us."

WOLVERHAMPTON promoter Chris Van Straaten has labelled the club's 80th anniversary celebration meeting on Monday as a massive success.

Van Straaten said: "Everything went in our favour - the weather was good, we had an excellent crowd and the old riders all really enjoyed meeting up again.

"It was great to see Sam Ermolenko and Ronnie Correy back on track and going flat-out, too."

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK boss Peter Waite bemoaned the Bandits' inability to track a full side at Stoke on Sunday due to international fixtures.

Waite said: "We've just got our team together, and then we go into a meeting without two key riders. It's unbelievable how the fixtures work out sometimes."

BIRMINGHAM manager Graham Drury has delivered an encouraging report on captain Jason Lyons - although Jack Hargreaves may be out for longer as the Brummies' injury crisis reaches unprecedented proportions.

Drury said: "Jason is improving on a daily basis and there is a very good chance he won't be out for the rest of the season. He has a broken collarbone and a broken bone in his back which is the same bone that he damaged in Australia previously."

EDINBURGH chairman Alex Harkess is hoping the Monarchs' current success in the League, and an impending appearance in the Premier Trophy Final, will lead to a boost in the Armadale crowds.

Harkess said: "A lot of people backed us when we won the league and, hopefully, they will turn out to support us again. We also hope to have a good run with the weather - it can make such a difference to our crowds if it's sunshine and blue skies."

GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick hopes the Tigers can use Sunday's emphatic away win at Mildenhall as a springboard to better results in the second half of the season.

Dick said: "We were delighted to get that result after such a tough time, and hopefully it will give everyone some confidence so that we can enjoy improved fortunes over the coming weeks."

ISLE OF WIGHT boss Dave Croucher has expressed concern over his side's away form so far this season, which threatens to damage their chances of a top-four finish.

Croucher said: "We have to realise that unless we start picking up league points on our travels, we're not going to gain ground on the teams currently above us. Our home form is fine but away from Smallbrook is a different matter at present."

KING'S LYNN skipper Tomas Topinka says a consistent run of matches during the summer will help the Stars to gain further momentum after a patchy opening to the campaign.

Topinka said: "The weather has been okay now so hopefully that stays the same and Buster (Chapman) can get on the track. It has settled down, it rides normal each week and you can see how performances and results have come together."

MILDENHALL have suffered a further setback with Finnish star Kaj Laukkanen electing to take a break from British speedway for personal and family reasons - with a 28-day facility granted by the BSPA.

Promoter Simon Barton said: "We are continuing to look for new riders, but it is proving very difficult. We do hope to have some news soon."

NEWCASTLE manager George English says his top two riders Christian Henry and
Josef Franc will need to put their Premier League Pairs disappointment behind them.

English said: "Christian rode his socks off, scoring two second places and then suffered an unfortunate fall when very close behind the Redcar pair. But Pepe was really out of sorts and managed just a single third place all night."

READING boss Tim Sugar was left to reflect on being so near, yet so far in the Knockout Cup as the Racers were edged out by a dramatic Somerset fightback inspired by Jason Doyle's paid-21 maximum at Smallmead.

Sugar said: "It was a big blow to go out of the competition after working so hard to get ourselves back into the position we did. We have no complaints though, as Jason Doyle rode superbly for them all afternoon."

REDCAR youngster Ty Proctor notched his best score in British speedway - 15 (paid 16) as the Bears overcame Birmingham in the damp clash of two injury-hit teams last week.

Proctor said: "The track was heavy early on and then, with the rain just continually coming down, it turned it into slop. But the track staff did well and, if we could get back on the inside, it was good. I was making starts like I've never made in my life, so I wanted to keep going. Once you're in front, the hard work is done."

RYE HOUSE captain Chris Neath says the Rockets' recent break in fixtures came at a good time for him as he seeks to re-capture his top form.

Neath said: "To be honest, it probably did me a favour. I've been struggling a lot and I probably needed a break anyway. I had my engines apart as I've not been happy with them."

SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey says recent changes to the Scorpions team will make them a play-off chasing outfit in the second half of the season.

Godfrey said: "We haven't got a weak link in the team now, and I think we've got a really good, strong seven. Emiliano (Sanchez) was the man we wanted, he's done an excellent job so far."

SHEFFIELD star Ricky Ashworth says the Tigers must start performing as a unit in their away matches if they are to challenge for a top-four place.

Ashworth said: "We only seem to have three or four riders doing their job in each away meeting and now is the time for us to improve or we can forget about the play-offs. I include myself in that - we have to get it right as a unit and not on an individual basis."

SOMERSET skipper Simon Walker wants the Rebels to go all the way in the Knockout Cup this season following their dramatic success over Reading at the weekend.

Walker said: "Having got so close in each of the last two years, getting to the final only to lose out to King's Lynn on aggregate, I really want us to go one better this year and actually win the cup."

STOKE skipper Ben Barker joint top-scored for the Potters with paid 13 in a solid Sunday win over Berwick, and stressed the importance of the result in the context of the Premier League campaign.

Barker said: "We were really fired up for this one because we need to be making up ground on those teams above us."

WORKINGTON pairing Daniel Nermark and Kauko Nieminen celebrated victory in last Friday's Premier League Pairs at Somerset - and promoter Ian Thomas hailed the entertainment on show at the Oak Tree Arena.

Thomas said: "I'm not just saying it because Workington won but it was sensational, a credit to the Premier League because some of the racing was just breath-taking."
