TIGERS SECURE DERBY WIN

Thursday May 08, 2008
SHEFFIELD renewed their rivalry with Hull and ran out 52-37 winners in a Yorkshire Cup clash at Owlerton.

The Vikings were back on track for one night only on a night of incident and drama with tricky track conditions thanks to a weekend Stock Car event.

Several riders avoided serious injury after coming a cropper, including a heart-stopping moment for home skipper Andre Compton in his second ride.

Compton was speared by Vikings' Robbie Kessler, after the German hit a fourth turn rut as the Tigers star was attempting to pass around the outside. Thankfully, Compton was able to pick himself up, win the re-run and go on to secure a five-ride maximum as Sheffield notched a comfortable win.

Rising star Tai Woffinden also escaped injury after hitting the same patch in heat 10 and slamming into the fourth turn fence. He was also fit to continue, while Tigers' Sam Martin and Hull's Emiliano Sanchez and Paul Thorp also came to grief at the same spot.

Apart from that there was some terrific racing, including Compton's spectacular third-to-first burst in the last race against Joel Parsons - riding for Hull rather than in his regular Tigers' racejacket - and British U18 and U21 double champion Woffinden.

TIGERS: A. Compton 15, R. Ashworth 11, B. Wilson 8, P. Cooper 6+1, L. Smethills 6, J. Birkinshaw 5+1, S. Martin 1.
HULL: J. Parsons 10, T. Woffinden 8+1, L. Dicken 7+1, R. Kessler 6, B. Evans 5+2, E. Sanchez 1, P. Thorp 0.
