OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT

Tuesday April 22, 2008
SHEFFIELD Speedway have issued the following statement in regard to an incident at the Premier League meeting with Berwick on Saturday:

An incident involving Sheffield’s Ricky Ashworth and Berwick’s Mikal Makovsky following race 11 resulted in Makovsky falling from his machine.

The Speedway Control Bureau Referee investigated at the time and levied a fine on Ashworth for his part in the incident..

Ashworth, on returning to the pits, immediately apologised to his Team Manager, Eric Boocock and subsequently to the Referee and the Berwick Promoter, Peter Waite. It was never Ashworth’s intention to cause Mikal to fall or injure him in any way.

A small number of disgruntled track staff from Berwick made advances to Ashworth’s pit area but were immediately restrained by the Clerk of the Course, Ashworth was subsequently advised to have no further contact with Makovsky and to leave the stadium promptly.

Sheffield Speedway riders are contractually obligated and where there may be a breach the club has the ability to investigate and discipline when appropriate. Such procedures are within the confidentiality of the contract consequently no further comment will be made.
