LATE COLLAPSE COSTS TIGERS

Saturday April 19, 2008
SHEFFIELD could find no answer to the superior firepower of Berwick in their 52-41 defeat at Shielfield Park on Saturday.

The Owlerton outfit tried hard but with Czech duo Adrian Rymel and Mikal Makovsky in awesome form there was no stopping them.

Sheffield were never ahead but did enough to keep things close - apart from Heat 11 when they conceeded a 4-2 to go 10-points down and that handed them a chance to nominate Andre Compton for double points under the tactical ride rule.

Reserve Lee Smethills, a former Berwick rider, teamed up with the skipper and was able to beat off the challenge of Henning Bager. Bager tried too hard and brought Smethills down and was excluded for his efforts, which gave Sheffield a welcome 8-1 win - and with three races to go they were only three-points down.

But Berwick picked up two maximums in the last three heats to give the scoreline a more emphatic appearance.

BERWICK: Adrian Rymel 14+1, Michal Makovsky 13+2, Norbert Magosi 9+1, Tero Aarnio 8, Henning Bager 7, Adam McKinna 1, Scott James 0.
SHEFFIELD: Andre Compton 13+1, Lee Smethills 8+3, Ricky Ashworth 6, Paul Cooper 5, Sam Martin 4, Ben Wilson 3, Joel Parsons 2+2.
