SHEFFIELD Speedway are urging their fans to back brave young Jack Lacey to give the terminally ill toddler the send-off he deserves.
Wesley Lacey, 28, and Rebecca Oldham, 29, have launched a GoFundMe page ‘Last Wishes for our Beautiful 3 Year old Boy’. The page has already raised over £16,000 of its £30,000 goal.
Their son, Jack, three, was diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumour called a Diffuse Pontine Glioma and has been given six months to a year to live.
Mr Lacey said the aim of raising money is so Jack can enjoy day trips, holidays, meals out, his first trip to the cinema and a new dog.
Jack loves bikes and cars and the Tigers would love him to come to Owlerton to experience speedway when the season starts later this month.
The speedway club have joined city football clubs Sheffield Wednesday and United and other corporations in backing the courageous youngster.
His father Wesley said: “If we have to accept this crazy, monstrous news, if we have to gulp down our insane amount of tears, anger, heartbreak, grief, then we need to make sure that this bright, intelligent young boy gets the send-off that he deserves.
“We can’t believe we’re even having to think about these things, let alone plan them. The worst of all his funeral."
Mr Lacey said that his son’s symptoms only developed in the last few weeks even though they were told his tumour has been growing for many months.
He added: “The tumour he has is a known fast and aggressive killer. It’s a very rare one that has no known cause and often doesn’t show symptoms until it’s too late, as it has with us.
Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG) are difficult to treat brain tumours found at the base of the brain.
They are very aggressive tumours and grow by invading normal brain tissue.
According to The Brain Tumour Charity, DIPG affects between 20 to 30 children in the UK every year and there is no effective treatment.
