TIGERS 58 BERWICK 32

Thursday June 14, 2018
SHEFFIELD‘s top four went unbeaten as the reigning Champions dismantled league leaders Berwick 58-32 at Owlerton.

Lasse Bjerre and Charles Wright were unstoppable, winning nine races between them, while Todd Kurtz and Kyle Howarth also scored paid maximums.

Youngster Jack Smith produced one of his more solid performances of the season while Jan Graversen also found a paid win along the way.

There are concerns over reserve James Shanes though who crashed heavily in Heat Eight and was withdrawn with a left foot injury.

Nevertheless, the win moved Tigers off the foot of the Championship table and it was a reminder to the rest of the league, that there is still plenty of capability within the Sheffield side.

Team Manager Simon Stead said: “To have four riders go unbeaten shows the dominance that we had in this meeting.

“I wasn’t surprised that we won because we know what we can do as a team, but maybe I was a little surprised by the margin of our victory.

“We know it’s been an indifferent start to the season, but there are plenty of positives that we can take out of this one going into the rest of the season.”

Kurtz and Howarth made a quick getaway in the opener to give Tigers a dream start.

That gap was reduced to just two points with four gone though before Sheffield seized control of the fixture with five heat advantages, four of them 5-1s, in the space of six races.

Tigers finished strongly as well, taking the chequered flag in five of the last six.

Next Thursday (June 21, 7.30) Glasgow are the visitors to Owlerton in what promises to be a tasty Championship head-to-head.
