REDCAR 40 TIGERS 50

SHEFFIELD are safely through to the next round of the Knockout Cup after a comfortable 94-68 aggregate victory over Redcar.

Tigers were already in control of the tie following Thursday’s 44-28 home victory over the Bears.

But they recovered from a slow start on Friday to also wrap up a 50-40 triumph at the Media Prima Arena.

Despite the hosts being severely depleted, with only a trio of their regular riders, they still got off to a strong start to open up an eight point lead with three races gone.

But the Steel city side quickly regrouped to deny the Teesside men another heat advantage for the rest of the evening.

Their win sets up a quarter-final tie with rivals Scunthorpe and boss Simon Stead was pleased to see his side get the job done.

“The boys have worked well as a team over the two meetings and we never felt too uncomfortable,” Stead said.

“I was pleased we got the win at their place though because it’s something we can take the positives from going forward.

“We were disappointed and frustrated to get off to the start we did, but we managed to turn it around pretty quickly and like I say it was nice to get another win under our belts.

“I’d like to give a special mention to Jan Graversen though; it’s been difficult for him since he came back in the main body of the side, but he looked on it a lot more tonight and I’m pleased for him.”

Charles Wright starred against his ex-employers and was only denied a maximum by Redcar guest Michael Palm Toft in Heat 15.

Lasse Bjerre also reached double figures against his old team while captain Kyle Howarth chipped in with two races wins at No.1.

Todd Kurtz enjoyed another solid night at No.2 while Jan Graversen fought for another score of six paid seven.

James Shanes contributed a steady five points from reserve while Jack Smith endured another tough night on Teesside.

Sheffield are next in action when they travel to Ipswich on Thursday (7.30.)
