SHEFFIELD TIGERS are ready to roar into action for the first time this season.

The reigning league champions launch their Championship Shield campaign against Newcastle at Owlerton on Thursday with three new signings ready to make their debut.

Youngsters Jack Smith and James Shanes are joined by Stockport racer Charles Wright and they team up with title winners Kyle Howarth, Lasse Bjerre and Todd Kurtz. Josh Bates is still ruled out with a back injury.

Boss Simon Stead is backing his side for more success in 2018.

“Last season is almost impossible to follow, but we’ll give it a right good go,” he said.

“We won the league because we were the best team all season, not just in the play-offs.

“I like the balance of this side and the new signings are all keen to do well for us. We need to make a good start and I’m sure we can do that in the Shield.”

Newcastle have a solid 1-7 with Ludvig Lindgren leading the way alongside seasoned campaigner Stuart Robson. Matthew Wethers has also ended his self imposed exile from the sport to join the Diamonds.

NEWCASTLE: Ludvig Lindgren, Stuart Robson, Lewis Rose, Matthew Wethers, Tero Aarnio, Carl Wilkinson, Ashley Morris.
