SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead conceded his side simply “weren’t good enough” as they went down 52-38 at Ipswich.
The Window Centre Tigers were in the mix for a point throughout the evening but the Witches came on strong in the closing stages to send them back to Yorkshire empty handed.
It was a frustrating night for Stead’s side, who were unable to take advantage of another sensational performance from skipper Kyle Howarth.
Stead admitted they were largely below par – and he has concerns about their reserve position after Nathan Stoneman was taken to hospital for scans on a leg injury after a heavy heat nine spill.
“We’re really disappointed,” Stead said. “As a team we weren’t good enough tonight, and with the exception of a couple riders we didn’t ride as well as we should have.
“Our situation at reserve is frustration, and it’s obviously an area we need to look to improve in if we’re to win tough away meetings like this.
“There’s certainly room for improvement, and we’ll have to go into tomorrow night with a new attitude as we look to put it behind us.”
Howarth recorded four race wins from five outings including an impressive heat 15 triumph after Josh Grajczonek was excluded following a crash involving Rory Schlein.
The Aussie ace was fortunately able to walk away unscathed, but it capped off a tough night for him in the No.1 spot.
Todd Kurtz and Josh Bates put in strong showings, claiming a race win apiece, but Lasse Bjerre and guest Josh Bailey struggled.
The Tigers will be back in home action at Berwick tomorrow (Thursday, 7.30) before heading to Peterborough on Friday to cap off a hectic few days.
