SHEFFIELD continued their fine home form but could not keep their League Cup dreams alive as they beat Glasgow 49-41 at Owlerton.

The Window Centre Tigers put in a determined display to claim their sixth successive home win in all competitions.

However, it was not enough to see them progress to the League Cup final as they failed to overcome the 14 point deficit necessary to claim an aggregate triumph.

Jack Lee’s side fought admirably, coming on strong in the closing stages as they looked to pull off an unlikely comeback - and although they fell just short, Lee was proud of the effort show by his depleted team.

Lee said: "We thought we had a chance of making up the points, but unfortunately Glasgow knew what they had to do and we just couldn't get any sort of a lead in the first half of the meeting.

"We had a team talk midway through which seemed to help, and we had 4-2 then a 5-1 straight after, but we just had too much to do in the end and couldn't quite pull it off.

"All the boys gave it their all, and we did well to come away with a win on the night.

"Unfortunately 14 points was just too much, and it's a shame because if we hadn't have had those injuries in the first leg it might have been a different story."

Brady Kurtz bounced back from a last place in his opening ride to reel off four classy wins as he continues to prove an excellent guest for Simon Stead at No.1.

Flying Frenchman David Bellego also impressed, notching three victories of his own including a superb move to pass James Sarjeant in heat eight.

Youngster Josh Bates continued his outstanding form at reserve to add another double figure return, combining with Kurtz for a 5-1 in heat 10 to give Sheffield a glimmer of hope entering the closing stages.

Stand-in skipper Jason Garrity also put in a strong showing to ensure the Tigers had plenty of firepower with 12 race wins - but they could not overcome a resolute Glasgow side who never allowed the hosts to close in on their target.

With guest Thomas Jorgensen struggling after a win in his opening ride and Arthur Sissis enduring a night to forget, Sheffield saw their fine League Cup campaign come to a disappointing conclusion.

They will nonetheless look to bounce back as they travel to Peterborough for a top of the table Premier League clash tomorrow night (Friday, 7.30).

The Tigers have drafted in Eddie Kennett and Kevin Doolan as guests as they travel to the East of England Showground looking to build on their stunning away win at Newcastle in their last Premier League outing.
