INJURY-HIT Sheffield gave their play-off hopes a huge boost with a remarkable 48-41 victory over Newcastle at Brough Park.
The depleted Window Centre Tigers put in a determined effort to edge their first victory in Tyneside since 2009 and emerge with all four Premier League points.
The result moves Sheffield 14 points clear of seventh placed side Berwick in the standings and within two points of the top spot.
It was a sensational all-around team performance from Jack Lee’s patched up side as they held their nerve in the closing stages having led from heat two onwards.
And team boss Lee was thrilled to see his side claim a shock victory courtesy of another gutsy display.
Lee said: “It’s a great win for us, and to win by seven and come away with all four points was the icing on the cake.
“We’ve had two good guests in Josh and Robbo who both came up trumps, Jason was his usual self with a tremendous performance.
“All the lads scored some good points, it was another good team effort and everyone pulled their weight.
“It’s a big boost in terms of our play-off situation, an away win like this is just what we needed, so we are delighted.”
Jason Garrity led the Tigers in spectacular fashion to continue his superb run of form, whilst Stuart Robson also added double figures as he stepped in as a guest for Andre Compton.
With fellow guest Josh Grajczonek and stand-in skipper David Bellego also adding solid contributions, the visitors top four all played their part with at least one race win apiece.
Down at reserve, Josh Bates and Arthur Sissis again played pivotal roles with useful scores as all six riders helped them secure a hard-fought victory.
The Tigers will be back in action at Owlerton on Thursday (7.30) as they look to overhaul a 14 point deficit in their League Cup semi-final against Glasgow.
They will face a busy two days as they then take on fellow Premier League high-flyers Peterborough at the East of England Showground on Friday night.
