TIGERS 52 WORKINGTON 40

Thursday August 07, 2014
GUTSY Sheffield defied their injury problems as they battled to a confidence-boosting 52-40 win over Workington at Owlerton.

The depleted Tigers put in a determined display to come out on top in a tense clash and move off the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was a hugely positive performance from Joe Screen's men - but they were left sweating on the fitness off talented young reserve Josh Bates.

Bates crashed heavily when attempting to pass Mason Campton in heat 10 and was taken to Northern General Hospital for checks.

It proved a bitter blow for the Tigers as they prepare to travel to Berwick on Saturday already without Ty Proctor, Andre Compton and Leigh Lanham.

And although pleased with three points added to their Premier League tally, boss Screen was left hoping for good news regarding Bates.

Said Screen: "It was a great win for us and a good performance to come away with the win and all three points.

"We just hope Josh is OK though because it was a big crash, and we definitely could do without any more injuries at the moment."

Skipper Simon Stead returned from World Cup duty to lead the side impeccably with a superb 14 point haul, whilst he received excellent support from throughout the side.

Guesting duo Kevin Wolbert and Ashley Birks both impressed, whilst down at reserve Taylor Poole continued his flying form to notch paid double figures.

With Ben Wilson also putting in a solid showing and Bates adding a crucial paid five before his unfortunate crash, the Tigers came out on top with a powerful performance.

SHEFFIELD 52: Simon Stead 14, Kevin Wolbert 11+2, Taylor Poole 9+2, Ashley Birks 8+1, Ben Wilson 6+1, Josh Bates 4+1, Andre Compton r/r
