HARD-FOUGHT WIN FOR TIGERS

Thursday July 19, 2007
DEADLY duo Andre Compton and Ben Wilson inspired Sheffield to a hard-fought 55-37 win over Somerset at Owlerton on Thursday.

The Sheffield Window Centra-backed club went into the meeting without Ricky Ashworth for a third successive outing as he is still struggling with a wrist injury.

Compton and Wilson were unbeaten in 12 outings between them, both scoring 17+1 in an entertaning affair against their fellow Premier League high-fliers.

The Rebels could have turned the meeting on its head when skipper Magnus Zetterstrom, the top rider in the Premier League, was given a double points ride in the 11th - but Joel Parsons put in the ride of the night to superbly outwit the Swede and effectively dismiss any hopes of an upset.

Tigers finished with a flourish, including a blistering finale from Compton and Wilson, but they should have had more points in the bag to take to Highbridge next month for the return match, especially with bonus points likely to prove crucial in the race for the play-offs.

TIGERS: Andre Compton 17+1, Ben Wilson 17+1, James Cockle 8, Joel Parsons 6+1, Paul Cooper 5, James Birkinshaw 2+1, Ricky Ashworth R/R.

SOMERSET: Magnus Zetterstrom 12, Ritchie Hawkins 9+1, Stephan Katt 5+2, Jordan Frampton 5+1, Simon Walker 4+1, Danny Warwick 2, Emil Kramer R/R.
