SKIPPER CAN'T STOP LYNN LOSS

Friday July 13, 2007
TIGERS skipper Andre Compton 16-point haul unfortunately wasn’t enough to stop Sheffield from crashing to a heavy 64-29 Premier League defeat at Kings Lynn on Friday evening.

It’s the second big loss the Tigers have suffered at the Norfolk Arena this season, but they did fair better this time around after suffering a 75-15 defeat in the Premier Trophy earlier in the season.

Sheffield had to go into the meeting operating rider-replacement for Ricky Ashworth who injured his wrist at Peterborough last weekend and without him, it left Compton pretty much fighting a lone furrow all night.

Kings Lynn got off to a flyer with a flurry of 5-1’s and 4-2’s which saw them holding a 27-9 lead after heat 6. Compton, however, did provide a short halt to the Stars scoring when he won heat 7 as a tactical ride ahead of James Brundle and Paul Lee. The ensuing Tigers 6-3 pulled the scoreline back to 30-15.

The Stars immediately replied with successive 4-2’s in heats 8 and 9 to lead 38-19 at the interval. After the break Kings Lynn really set about Sheffield with a couple of five-pointers and a 4-2 to open up an unassailable 55-26 lead after heat 13.

Ben Wilson came in for the Tigers in heat 14 off a 15-metre handicap as tactical substitute ride, but his double-point attempt didn’t reap any reward as he trailed in last behind Trevor Harding, Brundle and Paul Cooper. The resulting Stars 5-1 made it 60-27 and the night was finished off with a Daniel Nermark and Tomas Topinka 4-2 in heat 15.

KINGS LYNN: Daniel Nermark 15, Tomas Topinka 11+2, James Brundle 10+1, Paul Lee 9+2, Chris Mills 8+1, Trevor Harding 6, Benji Compton 5+1

TIGERS: Andre Compton 16, Ben Wilson 4, Joel Parsons 3, James Cockle 3, Paul Cooper 2, James Birkinshaw 1+1, rider-replacement for Ricky Ashworth
