ROYNON IS TOP GUN

Thursday July 11, 2013
ADAM ROYNON continued his injury comeback with a brilliant win in Thursday’s 2013 Top Gun Individual event.

In a field packed with exciting young talent, it was Roynon’s experience that came out on top as the Window Centre Tiger romped to victory in front of a jubilant Owlerton crowd.

Roynon started the meeting in superb form with three straight victories, but he was matched by Newcastle’s Steve Worrall who did the same. When the two met in heat 13 it was Worrall who came out on top, and he all but booked his place in the final with 12 points from a possible 12.

With Roynon meeting the impressive Kyle Newman in heat 20 both men knew the victor would seal their place in the final, and it was Somerset’s Newman who made it with a superb start meaning Roynon had to settle for a place in the semi-final.

Alongside Ryan Douglas, Tigers team-mate Facu Albin and Argentine Jonathan Itture - on his British debut - Roynon made a brilliant start and he coasted to his place in the final while Albin rounded Douglas on the third lap to join him.

Of the six Premier League regulars in the lineup four were in the final, but it was the big-race experience of Elite League star Roynon that won out as he fended off a strong challenge from Newman to claim the Top Gun title.

Club owner Neil Machin gave four new riders the chance to impress club bosses and they had varying fortunes. Argentinian youngster Itture looked impressive with two race victories and Roland Benko was solid to end on seven points.

However, Australian Hunter Anderson and young Kiwi Hayden Sims scored two and three points respectively and failed to impress. Sheffield’s Aussie star Damien Koppe recovered from a bad start to score seven points from his final three races.

Understandably, Roynon was delighted to claim victory; “It was a good night, I had some good races with Steve and Kyle but I was just chuffed to get the jump in the final.

“It’s been a tough comeback but I’m feeling better every meeting I race, hopefully I can kick on from here now.”

Scores; Roynon 12+3, Newman 13+2, Albin 12+1, Worrall 12, Douglas 12, Itture 10, Chessell 10, Hopwood 8, Benko 7, Koppe 7, Payne 5, Priest 4, Sims 3, Williamson 2, Anderson 2, Phillips 1.
