WOFFINDEN WINS SEMI-FINAL

Thursday April 25, 2013
TAI WOFFINDEN romped to a faultless 15 point maximum as he qualified for the British Final in style by winning the Wosskow Brown Solicitors British Championship semi-final.

The Grand Prix star is in immaculate form at the moment and never looked like his tag as meeting favourite would be unjustified as he looked a class above the rest of the field.

Woffinden, godson of Sheffield owner Neil Machin, won his first three races by the length of a straight and in the one race he did miss the start, he rounded seven-times British Champion Scott Nicholls with ease to record another victory.

It was an entertaining meeting in front of a strong Owlerton crowd, and it was the performances of the Premier League riders that made it such a good spectacle.

Qualifying along with Woffinden was former Tiger Josh Auty, who won three races on his way to 12 points, and Rye House skipper Olly Allen - who went through on 11.

Richard Hall have the home fans something to cheer as he produced some trademark passes to notch 11 and book his place in the May 13 showpiece, and he was joined by two more former Sheffield riders in Ashley Birks and Chris Schramm.

Birks never looked like missing the cut after winning his opening two rides and it Schramm, a surprise package, fully deserved his nine points and showed why he was drafted in to the Sheffield team last year.

The last place went to reigning champion Scott Nicholls, who was left sweating until the last heat.

Nicholls scored nine points and a win for Joe Haines in his final ride would’ve seen him also on nine, but with two race wins. As it happened, Haines finished second and Nicholls made the cut, notching the last spot.

The seven qualifiers from Thursday join the seven who qualified from last week’s other semi-final at Edinburgh; Danny King, Craig Cook, Edward Kennett, Chris Harris, Richie Worrall and Stuart Robson.

The two wild-card’s named for the the meeting are Sheffield skipper Simon Stead and Birmingham man Ben Barker.

Scorers; Woffinden 15, Auty 12, Allen 11, Hall 11, Birks 10, Schramm 9, Nicholls 9, (all qualify) Haines 8, Garrity 8, Newman 7, Howe 6, Perry 4, Barker 3, Branford 3, Mear 2, Sarjeant 2, Hopwood 0.
