ASHWORTH LOOKING FOR REPEAT

Monday September 12, 2011
SHEFFIELD skipper Ricky Ashworth says he would love to repeat one of the highlights of his career in the Premier League Riders’ Championship later this month.

Ashworth, winner of the meeting in 2009, will compete in the Owlerton event on September 25, having qualified as one of the top two riders to be second in his club’s averages at the cut-off date of September 1.

He joins Tigers’ No.1 Shane Parker as a qualifier, with top-average rider of the vast majority of the 14 Premier League clubs involved.

The only exceptions are Redcar, with Aaron Summers replacing broken-leg victim Jason Lyons, and Scunthorpe, who will be represented by Tero Aarnio as David Howe and second-placed Richard Hall are on FIM duty on the day. Rye House’s Jordan Frampton takes the other Wild Card position along with Ashworth.

Ashworth said: “I remember what it meant to me when I won it, I have to say it’s one of the highlights of my career so far and I would love to do it for a second time.

“I know Shane would love to do it as well because it would be a fantastic way for him to bring the curtain down on his career and if I can’t win it then I’d like Shane to do it.

“I’m sure we will have a fantastic following with Sheffield fans making lots of noise. Sheffield is like the home of the PLRC these days, it always attracts a big crowd and I’m looking forward to it.”

PLRC DRAW: Chris Neath (Rye House), Ben Barker (Plymouth), Aaron Summers (Redcar), Shane Parker (Sheffield), Kevin Wolbert (Edinburgh), Charlie Gjedde (Newport), Mark Lemon (Newcastle), Sebastian Alden (Berwick), Sam Masters (Somerset), Kauko Nieminen (Leicester), Rusty Harrison (Workington), Kevin Doolan (Ipswich), Joe Screen (Glasgow), Tero Aarnio (Scunthorpe), Ricky Ashworth (Sheffield), Jordan Frampton (Rye House).
