ROY WILSON

Sunday August 28, 2011
SHEFFIELD Speedway stalwart, Roy Wilson, passed away on Saturday following a long illness that curtailed his involvement in Speedway some 3 years ago.

Roy grew up with Speedway in the South of England before transferring his interests to Sheffield some years ago, where he was able to volunteer his services to develop and encourage many youngsters to take up the sport.

Sheffield owner, Neil Machin, commented: "Roy was the face and the heart of our training schools, he has been missed since his illness forced him to retire and will now be missed forever.

“He was responsible for encouraging the likes of Simon Stead, David Howe, Robbie Kessler and of course his Grandson, Ben Wilson to pursue Speedway careers. For over 20-years he ran our training schools in all sorts of weather, fixed bikes and drove youngsters around the country to gain experience. British Speedway owes the ever popular Roy a debt of gratitude."

The promotion and staff at Sheffield Speedway wish to extend their sincere condolences to Roy's wife Betty, Grandson Ben and all the rest of the family at this very difficult time. Funeral details are yet to be announced.
